Mt LeConte Shelter Gear Checklist
The Mt LeConte Shelter is a three-sided stone and wood hut with sleeping platforms, set just past the lodge buildings near the top of the third highest peak in the park. The park requires you to sleep inside it, so a tent and a hammock stay at home and the pack is built around a sleeping bag, a pad that does not rustle, rain gear, a headlamp and a plan for water and food on the bear cables. The people who wrote about it climb 5 or more steep miles with rock steps and wire handrails, and they warn about cold, wet nights even in summer.

- Permit and cost
- The park requires a backcountry permit and an advance reservation for every night, now issued through Recreation.gov. The park lists $8 per person per night plus a $6 non-refundable permit fee, and a party limit of 8.
- Approach
- Reports put the Alum Cave climb at about 5 to 5.5 miles, starting near 3,800 feet. A 2007 trip report logged the descent as 5 miles and about 3,000 feet. The shelter sits a few hundred yards past the lodge.

- Sleeping setup
- Inside is a wooden floor platform with a second bunk level reached by a small ladder, and no rooms. One October visitor claimed a spot by leaving a bag on it, and several spots stayed empty after dark that night.
- Weather on top
- Storms are common. One 2007 trip got over two inches of rain overnight, and a Reddit poster ran into hail and strong wind at the nearby Icewater Spring shelter. In August the same poster saw lows in the 50s at LeConte.

- The Alum Cave trailhead lot fills early. An October visitor parked more than a mile down the road, and a summer poster says to start early because the lot fills fast.

What the agency requires on Mt LeConte Shelter
Sleep inside the shelter, with no tent or hammock
Hikers whose itinerary includes a shelter must stay inside it. Hammocks may not be used inside a shelter or tied to one in any way, and no one may stay consecutive nights at a shelter.
Food, trash and toiletries on the bear cable
Anything with an odor, including food, trash, lip balm and toothpaste, goes on the bear cable system at the shelter. The park also says to pack out all food, trash and gear.
Burying human waste correctly
Waste must go into a hole dug at least 6 inches down, and the hole must be 100 feet or more away from the shelter, water and trail. Soap may not be used in any water source.
Fire only in the ring
Fires are allowed only at designated campsites and shelters, inside the existing ring, and only dead wood already on the ground may burn.
What hikers carry on Mt LeConte Shelter
A warm sleeping bag and a closed-cell pad
The platform is hard wood. A guiding outfitter supplies a 20 degree synthetic bag and a foam pad for this exact shelter. One October hiker still tossed on the floor, and another occupant's crinkly pad kept waking the room.
A Reddit poster who sleeps in the Smokies says August nights still reached the 50s.

Rain jacket or poncho
The 2007 trip started in a downpour and ended with ankle-deep water on the Alum Cave Trail. That hiker wore a cape-style rain shelter and a poncho. A lodge-blog writer lists a rain jacket among the things they always carry.

Headlamp, plus a small spare light
One October visitor reported no campfire to gather around, so everyone turned in early, and the guide outfitter asks every guest for a headlamp. The lodge writers say a phone is a poor light on a root-and-rock trail.

Two 1-liter bottles, plus a way to treat water
Hikers top off at a spring near the lodge or at a spigot beside the lodge. The lodge writers see people reach the top dehydrated, so they say to start with plenty. The guide outfitter packs filters and chemical treatment as a backup.

A light stove and a pot for dinner and breakfast
Hikers cook at the shelter or at a viewpoint, since fires are limited. One cooked oatmeal for a partner in the morning. Another cooked dinner on Cliff Tops before watching the sunset.

A daypack or a light summit bag
After arriving, people walk to sunset and sunrise points. One pair moved water, rain gear, first aid, headlamps and snacks into small packs for a side trip. Another left their bedding on a platform to claim it.
Trekking poles and traction-friendly shoes
The upper trail has stone steps and cable handrails. The 2007 hikers estimated that handrails covered about half a mile to three quarters of a mile of the 5-mile route and found wet slabs slick. The guide outfitter prefers trail shoes over heavy boots and provides poles.

Hikers walk to Myrtle Point before dawn, and one visitor felt a distinct chill there even in an unusually warm October. A summer poster saw hail and 60 mph wind at the lower shelter.
