Narrows Top-Down Gear Checklist
The top-down Narrows is 16 miles from Chamberlain's Ranch to the Temple of Sinawava, mostly in the river, as a long day or one night in a numbered campsite. The park requires a permit, a waste bag for each person and food storage that animals cannot reach. Hikers add footwear that drains and grips, a tall stick for balance, dry bags for everything that must stay dry, and a plan for water, because the park says not to drink from the river.

- How much is in the water
- The river is the route and there is no maintained trail. The permit page says the river covers at least 80 percent of the route, by wading, walking and some swimming. The park's safety page says at least 60 percent, so plan for most of it. Hikers describe ankle to knee depth for much of the first day, with a few waist-deep stretches and some swims on day two.

- The 16 miles can be done in one long day or with a single night in a designated campsite. The park does not allow multi-night trips through the Virgin River Narrows. Twelve numbered campsites sit between about mile 9 and mile 11.5.

- The park gives average river temperatures of 56 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit in summer, 41 to 53 in spring and fall, and 38 to 45 in winter. Early-season runoff can mean colder, faster and deeper water.

- The Narrows can close at any time for high water or flash flooding and shuts when the weather service posts a Flash Flood Warning. Hikers check the river flow, and one source treats 70 cubic feet per second as the easier limit.

- One hiker's watch logged around 20 miles for the 16 mile route because of overland detours and zigzags. Another found their pace fell to roughly 1.5 to 2 miles per hour in the water, well under their normal speed on dry trail.

What the agency requires on The Narrows
A wilderness permit, collected in person
Top-down trips need a permit, whether a day trip or a night in a campsite. You collect it in person at the Wilderness Desk inside the Zion Canyon Visitor Center, and the person named on the reservation has to be the one to do it. Plan on 20 minutes and have your vehicle details ready.

One human waste disposal bag per person
Wilderness permit groups must carry at least one waste bag per person. Human waste, toilet paper and hygiene products come out with you. The park notes there are no toilets in the canyon.

Food in a secure container or hung mesh bag
Keep food in a secure hard-sided container, or in a wire mesh bag with interlocking seams that hangs where wildlife cannot reach it.
What hikers carry on The Narrows
Footwear that grips, drains and protects the toes
The park calls sturdy closed-toe footwear essential and says sandals and crocs are not appropriate, because the rocks underfoot are slippery. Hikers differ on the kind. Renters liked canyoneering boots over neoprene socks for grip and ankle protection. One hiker wore sneakers over the socks and found heavy hiking boots would get waterlogged. Another said non-waterproof trail runners would likely do, and that waterproof shoes just fill up.

Neoprene socks and a spare dry pair for camp
Hikers wear neoprene socks to keep their feet warm in cold water, and the park mentions neoprene in spring and fall. One pair of socks got holes by the end of a trip. Overnight hikers also bring dry socks for camp, and one dreaded pulling damp neoprene back on the second morning.

A tall stick or trekking poles
The park highly recommends poles or sticks for balance and for probing depth when the water is cloudy. One hiker rented a large stick and distrusted poles in swift water, while another found 3 to 4 points of contact useful in fast water. A trip report says poles can break when wedged between rocks.

Dry bags or a pack liner
The park says even experienced hikers trip and fall and that you should keep belongings in waterproof bags. Hikers line the pack with a trash compactor bag and add small dry bags or a zip bag for the phone. A trip report says a deep crossing can partly submerge your pack and soak the sleeping bag.

A warm layer in a dry bag
The park says to carry extra warm clothing in a waterproof bag year-round because the canyon floor is shaded and breezy. One group started at 43 degrees in shorts and long sleeves and felt that was enough once they were moving. Another hiker in a sun hoody was slightly cold at the top.

A water plan that skips the river
The park says to bring one gallon per person per day and not to drink from rivers or streams, since filters do not remove cyanotoxins. Hikers refill at Big Spring, the only spring they name. One pair carried 3 liters each at the start and found that more than they needed on a cool day. An older trip report filtered from the river, which the current park guidance advises against.

A headlamp, a first aid kit and extra food
The park says hikers spend unplanned nights in the canyon every week, that a phone light is not enough, and that food can be a lifesaver. It asks for a basic first aid kit and more food than you plan to eat.
A mouse-proof food bag instead of a bear canister
A trip report says bears are not a major issue here but some campsites have mouse trouble, so store food carefully. A May 2026 camper saw no animals near their site.

Sandals, crocs or water shoes
The park says sandals and crocs lead to twisted ankles and crushed toes. A hiker with many southwest miles said water shoes are not sturdy and bang your toes, and a trip report says most people avoid open-toe sandals because the river is cloudy and rocky.

Yes. Every top-down trip from Chamberlain's Ranch needs one, whether it is a long day or a single overnight. You pick it up in person at the Wilderness Desk in the Zion Canyon Visitor Center. The bottom-up route from the Temple of Sinawava does not need one.
