About This Permit
The overnight permit is the one most John Day trips need. It covers one group for the length of the trip, and BLM ties it to your launch date and launch segment rather than to a campsite. You camp where you find a spot, not at an assigned site.
Quota is per segment and it is small. BLM publishes 8 groups a day on Segment 3A, 9 on 3B, 5 on 2A, 4 on 2B, 4 on 1A, 2 on 1B, and 2 long-distance permits. Fall high season on Segments 1A and 1B drops to 2 and 1 respectively.
Half of each launch date's quota releases four months out at 7 a.m. Pacific and the rest one month out. Cancelled permits go straight back on the Recreation.gov calendar, which is where a watch pays off on a segment that sells out in seconds.
Rules & Regulations
- •High-season overnight quota by segment, in groups per day: Long Distance 2, 3A 8, 3B 9, 2A 5, 2B 4, 1A 4 (2 in fall), 1B 2 (1 in fall)
- •Stay limit is 14 days, and 1 night per segment year-round on Segments 1A and 1B
- •Maximum group size is 16, dropping to 4 on Segments 1A and 1B from September 1 to November 30
- •Entry date, entry segment and trip leader cannot be changed after booking, and alternates cannot be added later
- •One person may hold one overnight permit and three day-use permits at a time
- •Carry and use a water-tight reusable toilet system sized for the whole party and the whole trip
- •No wood or charcoal fires from June 1 to October 15, and fire pan plus ash carry-out when fires are allowed
- •Register at the launch kiosk with the stub off your printed permit or you get a two-year no-show restriction
