What you actually book

A Great Walk booking is a set of nights. You pick a walk, a start date and the huts or campsites you will sleep in, and you need a booking for each night. Walkers without one can be charged a penalty or turned away, so there is no turning up and hoping.

Some walks have rules of their own. The Milford Track runs one way only, has three huts and does not allow camping. Read the DOC page for your walk before you pick dates.

The virtual queue

DOC runs a virtual queue on the booking system when demand is high. The 2026 media release says the queue is there to manage peak demand and gives no more detail on how it orders people, so have your dates and group agreed before the day.

Each walk opens on its own day, so you can plan for the walk you want most and not for all ten at once. The dates are in our guide to Great Walks booking dates.

After you book

Date changes stay inside the same booking season, 1 July to 30 June, and you cannot move a booking to a different hut. Cancellation fees depend on how many days remain before your first night and are set in DOC's booking terms, which are worth reading before you pay.

Prices change each season. The Milford Track, for example, charged NZ$106 for a New Zealand adult and NZ$152 for an international adult per hut night in the 2026/27 Great Walks season, and NZ$30 per adult per night outside it. Check the DOC page for the walk you want.

What PermitSnag does here

Each permit page says whether you can set a PermitSnag alert for it, and links to the agency that sells it.
