How do I book the Milford Track?
Book each hut night on the DOC booking system at bookings.doc.govt.nz. In the Great Walks season, 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, you need a booking for Clinton, Mintaro and Dumpling huts. DOC runs a virtual queue when bookings open.
When does Milford Track booking open?
For stays from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, bookings opened on Wednesday 13 May 2026 at 9:30 am New Zealand time. DOC had not published dates for the 2027/28 season on 29 October 2026, so the 2026 date is last year's pattern.
How much does the Milford Track cost?
In the Great Walks season a hut night is NZ$106 per adult at the New Zealand rate and NZ$152 at the international rate. A child pays NZ$53 or NZ$76. Outside the season it is NZ$30 per adult. Prices are the 2026/27 figures and DOC changes them each season.
Can you camp on the Milford Track?
No. DOC says camping is not permitted. The three huts, Clinton, Mintaro and Dumpling, are the only places to sleep, with 40 bunks each.
Can you walk the Milford Track in either direction?
No. The track can only be walked one way, from Glade Wharf to Sandfly Point.
How long is the Milford Track?
DOC lists four stages of 5 km, 17.5 km, 13 km and 18 km, which add up to ≈53.5 km (33.2 mi). It takes four days with three nights in huts.
Do you need a booking to walk the Milford Track outside the Great Walks season?
No. From 1 May to 31 October there is no booking, huts are first come, first served, and facilities are reduced. The Great Walks season runs from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027.
