How do I book the Routeburn Track?
Book each night on the DOC booking system at bookings.doc.govt.nz. Huts and campsites need a booking from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, and DOC runs a virtual queue when bookings open.
When does Routeburn Track booking open?
For stays from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, bookings opened on Friday 15 May 2026 at 9:30 am New Zealand time. DOC had not published dates for 2027/28 on 29 October 2026, so that is last year's pattern.
How much does the Routeburn Track cost?
In the Great Walks season huts cost NZ$88 per adult at the New Zealand rate and NZ$132 at the international rate, per night. Campsites are NZ$28 or NZ$42. These are the 2026/27 prices.
Which direction should I walk the Routeburn Track?
DOC allows either direction. The Routeburn Shelter end is near Glenorchy and The Divide end is on the Milford road, so choose by where you can arrange transport.
How long is the Routeburn Track?
DOC's four stages (7.5, 2.3, 11.3 and 12 km) add up to ≈33.1 km (20.6 mi). Plan for two to three nights.
Is Lake Howden Hut open?
No. A storm destroyed Lake Howden Hut in February 2020 and DOC lists it as not available.
Can I get a Routeburn Track booking if the huts are full?
Nights from a cancellation go back on the DOC system. Set an alert on this page and we'll tell you when a spot opens.
