White Wolf Campground: what makes it different
White Wolf Campground is the smallest door on the Big Oak Flat side of Tioga Road: NPS sells just 6 lottery and 4 week-ahead places a day. Recreation.gov describes a pleasant trail through red fir forest with access to different lake basins and the Yosemite Creek watershed.1,7
Getting to the start
White Wolf sits on Tioga Road, and the trailhead list on the NPS trailhead page names the campground itself as the starting point. NPS shows a flush toilet there when the campground is open, and Big Oak Flat Information Station issues the permit.1
Because the route starts inside a campground, the NPS regulations page matters twice: you must camp at least one mile from any road, and a permit is invalid if you drive a vehicle during the itinerary. Recreation.gov adds that Tioga Road is closed in winter and usually opens in late May, and that a reservation made while the road is shut is not valid and not refunded.3,7
NPS lists White Wolf as one of three seasonal backpackers campgrounds, with Yosemite Valley and Tuolumne Meadows. A permit holder may spend one night there before or after the trip.4
The first leg
A hiker who started from the campground in the first week of September described a fire access road heading north toward the canyon. Harden Lake came just under three miles in and was quite low. That report puts the whole walk down to Pate Valley at roughly 10 miles with about 3,000 feet of descent.8
A 2003 blogger who spent his first night at White Wolf turned down the trail to the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne at a junction south of camp. He lost the trail once, in burned forest, and needed 15 to 20 minutes to find it again.9
Terrain and difficulty
NPS describes the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne trip from White Wolf as 30.8 miles one way with 5,350 feet of gain, finishing at Tuolumne Meadows via Glen Aulin. It calls out a steep drop of about 4,000 feet to Pate Valley, then a climb past Muir Gorge and the canyon's waterfalls: Waterwheel, LeConte and California. NPS rates the permit demand for that route Medium.2
Heat is the story at the bottom. One September report found White Wolf cool and the canyon floor above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with Morrison Creek, which the switchbacks follow, bone dry and the Tuolumne River the main water. A July 2003 blogger instead had a freezing first night at White Wolf and soaked a tent with dew.8,9
Quota at this entry point
- 2026 daily quota at White Wolf Campground, overnight wilderness, lottery share: 6 people a day. NPS trailhead page, updated May 11, 2026. Big Oak Flat Information Station window: June 18 to October 14, 2026.1
- 2026 daily quota at White Wolf Campground, overnight wilderness, week-ahead share: 4 people a day. The first come, first served share released seven days ahead. NPS prints it as a separate column.1
Rules specific to this entry point
Food storage is by approved bear canister only. Hanging or counterbalancing food is not legal, and bear spray is not allowed. Camp at least 100 feet from water and trail.3
Tioga Road lotteries apply only to start dates from the third Thursday in June. In 2026 that is June 18, which matches the first day of the Big Oak Flat window on the trailhead page.4,1
A permit is for one start date and an exit date no more than 14 days later. If you arrive after 11 am on the start date you must have held the reservation for late arrival or it is canceled.4
Where it leads
Recreation.gov lists four White Wolf divisions: the campground itself, plus White Wolf to Pate Valley (a descent into the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne), White Wolf to Aspen Valley (southwest), and White Wolf to Smith Meadow (northwest past Harden Lake). The campground division is the one the Recreation.gov text pairs with lake basins and the Yosemite Creek watershed.7
The Pate Valley end of the canyon has a large summer work camp with several bridges. Hikers who stopped there in September found the sites by the main bridge very exposed to the sun, and one moved about a mile up the trail to a shadier spot with river access.8
What trip reports say
A five-day Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne loop from White Wolf began with a hot descent. The writer saw a large black rattlesnake on the Pate Valley beach, moved away from it, and said Pate Valley is known for rattlesnakes. Night temperatures stayed in the mid-70s Fahrenheit, so they slept on top of their bags.8
A July 2003 blog post by a traveler who picked the canyon over Ten Lakes says the route had plenty of water: a calm pond, a fast Tuolumne and falls cascading across the trail. He camped beside the trail about 20 meters from where two rivers meet near Pate Valley because other spots were taken.9
When to go from here
Timing follows Tioga Road. The Big Oak Flat window on the trailhead page runs June 18 to October 14, 2026. The September hiker found a dry creek and a canyon floor over 100 degrees, and thought an earlier season would give better scenery and better water.1,8
NPS pages disagree on when reservations start. The Wilderness Permits page (updated December 31, 2025) says reservations run late April through October, while the Wilderness Permit Reservations page (updated June 22, 2026) says May through October. For this trailhead, the June 18 start on the trailhead page is the one that applies.5,6,1
Compare with nearby entry points
- White Wolf to Pate Valley: White Wolf to Pate Valley is a separate Recreation.gov division from the same camp, for a trip that goes straight down to the canyon. The campground division here is the more general door, and its Recreation.gov text points to lake basins and Yosemite Creek rather than the canyon.7
- Yosemite Creek: Yosemite Creek is on the same Big Oak Flat window but has more room, 15 lottery and 10 week-ahead people against 6 and 4 here, and its toilet is a vault rather than a flush toilet in a campground.1
- Ten Lakes: Ten Lakes is the other way to leave White Wolf country for the high lakes. Recreation.gov calls it the most direct route to Grant Lakes and the Ten Lakes basin, and the 2003 blogger rejected it because it climbs to nearly 10,000 feet.7,9
Rules every Yosemite wilderness trailhead shares
- Any overnight stay in the Yosemite Wilderness needs a permit, all year; day hikes need none unless they go to Half Dome. Each trailhead has a daily quota.
- Reservations cover trips May through October. 60% of each quota goes by weekly lottery on Recreation.gov 24 weeks ahead; the other 40% opens first come, first served at 7 am Pacific seven days ahead.
- The fee is $10 per application plus $5 per person once a permit is issued, none of it refundable. Collect the permit in person the day before or the morning you start.
- Groups are 15 people at most, or 8 for cross-country hiking. Bear canisters are required throughout the wilderness, and you camp at least four trail miles from Yosemite Valley, Tuolumne Meadows, Glacier Point, Hetch Hetchy and Wawona.
