About Bright Angel
Bright Angel Campground sits at the bottom of Grand Canyon near Phantom Ranch at 2,480 feet elevation. The campground has 33 sites with picnic tables, toilets, and potable water from Bright Angel Creek. Mule-supported duffel service and meals at Phantom Ranch canteen are available by reservation.
Bright Angel Campground is the only developed campground at the bottom of Grand Canyon. The 33 sites fill months in advance, and rim-to-river-to-rim attempts require this stop. Getting a reservation here during peak season is harder than many lottery permits.
The Experience
You descend 4,380 feet over 9.3 miles as the walls close in around you. By the time you reach camp, you're surrounded by billion-year-old Vishnu Schist, the oldest exposed rock in the canyon. The river roars nearby. Stars punch through darkness unmarred by any artificial light. The scale is almost incomprehensible.
Most hikers descend the South Kaibab Trail (6.3 miles, 4,780 feet down) and ascend the Bright Angel Trail (9.3 miles, 4,380 feet up) to complete the classic rim-to-river circuit. The campground sits at Phantom Ranch, where Bright Angel Creek meets the Colorado River. The silver suspension bridge crosses the river just upstream.
Rim-to-rim hikers continue up the North Kaibab Trail (14 miles, 5,850 feet) to the North Rim. This 21-24 mile traverse requires either a shuttle or two vehicles.
